A Brief History of a Pinhole Camera
Images formed through a pinhole was found in the natural environment and everyday life. People all around the world observed the images created by light rays passing through a pinhole since ancient times. The earliest surviving description a pinhole camera dates back to the 5th century by a Chinese philosopher Mo Ti and a man from the western hemisphere, Aristotle, often asked why the leaves of a tree or a gap between fingers created a crescent on the ground below. It wasn't until 1485 that Italian artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci set down the first detailed description of a pinhole camera.
Originally the camera obscura was a large light proof room where the image was projected through the small opening on one wall and created on the opposite side of the room. This method was used to study the solar eclipse or as a drawing aid for artists.
Ever since Scottish scientist Sir David Brewster took the first photography using the pinhole technique people all around the world have taken interest in the camera obscura. Pinhole camera's became more established in the 19th century and it wasn't until the mid 20th century that scientists began using the technique to photography x-ray radiation and gamma rays as it was more effective then using a camera with a lens.
